Year 9 pupils studying Latin at The Westgate School recently had the opportunity to visit the Latin department and Treasury at Winchester College. The visit offered a glimpse into the rich history of Roman civilisation to complement the GCSE Latin syllabus.
The Winchester College Treasury houses an impressive collection of historical artefacts, including 100 Athenian painted vases from the 6th and 5th centuries BC and casts of the Parthenon Frieze. The collection also includes about three hundred ancient coins, some of which Westgate pupils were able to examine closely. Pupils were also taught a Latin language lesson by one of Winchester College's Latin professors, providing a deeper insight into the language.
At The Westgate School, we are proud to offer Latin in Year 9 as a GCSE option as part of our broad curriculum. For Years 7 & 8, we are increasingly introducing aspects of Latin into our English structures, to lay the foundations. The Latin GCSE syllabus covers both language and the key facets of the Roman Civilisation. A visit to the Treasury to learn about and examine original artefacts from the Roman era was a fantastic opportunity to enthuse our pupils about the subject and we extend our thanks to the Latin department for their hospitality.
